Higher National Certificate

As part of my Higher National Certificate in working with communities I am required to carry out a practical assignment in the form of a graded unit. This includes my current knowledge and experience gained from units completed throughout the course.The following information will provide the evidence of achieving this. The following project will benefit the children and parents involved by helping them take part in their child’s education. Having discussed the proposed subject with my placement supervisor and class tutor it was agreed that project will be a science project with parents and primary pupils of St. Columbkille’s primary school Planning stage Parents of p6-7 pupils will be invited to attend over a four week programme divided into one hour sessions.This will begin after the Easter break in mid-April with a challenge task to carry out at home. The workers involved are myself. The placement supervisor who will mentor and support me, also actively help during the project activity. The Teacher who will observe the children and help out when required. The teacher will also promote curriculum for excellence with the children beforehand. My college tutor who will observe the process of graded unit. The parents who will take part in the activity learning with their child and helping them develop throughout the process.Strengths and weaknesses The strengths for the project are that the activity is being delivered in a safe educational environment where the children will not feel anxious of being in a new environment. The parents are also experiencing working within an educational environment. having fun with learning and also the chance to socialise with other parents. It will help bring families together and build strong relationships and enable parents to be part of their child’s education. The family will also have the support of home school partnership workers and family support worker if required.The age of the children makes it easy for them to learn and creates early intervention to prevent future learning problems. The weaknesses of the project is its highly deprived area some of the parents have many barriers to participation including poverty, poor education or lack of knowledge, financial difficulties that prevents them getting to and from school. Some of the parents may be young parents and experience some issues such poor health or illnesses like depression which will include low self-esteem, lack of confidence difficulty being around others.Sociological theories of the group This particular school is based in a high deprivation area and has many residents some of which who may have various problems such as low income, lack of education and poor housing all of which has a huge impact on the child development throughout their education. As children develop throughout their life’s it is important that their needs are met. According to Abraham Maslow (1954) hierarchy of needs believes that basic needs should be met in order to sustain and fulfil more advanced needs.Maslow’s original five stage model was created in his early years and was described as the hierarchy of needs pyramid which includes the following: Physiological (food, water, shelter, warmth) safety: (security, stability, freedom from fear) belonging-love: (friends, family, spouse, lover) self-esteem: (achievement, mastery, recognition, respect) self-actualization: (creativity, pursue inner talent, creativity, fulfilment) having this project with families will promote all these benefits and work towards fulfilling the children’s needs and give them more confidence throughout life and become more successful through their education.The interactionists’ perspective on education focuses in the process of different levels in achievement including the details of day to day life in schools. One of the advantages of the interactionists approach is that it shows educational experience is not just controlled by home background or knowledge and skill. It’s much more fun and fulfilling in ways with projects like this one. Event established and reason for itThe project has been chosen to help bring parents together to work in co-laboration with schools in order to be actively involved in their children’s education and to encourage positive family experience and that schools and home school partnership can start to build good relationships with the parents. Aims and objectives for activity The aim and objectives are to use the science as a focus on the children’s learning needs to engage with p6-7 families. To offer practical science workshops to pupils and parents that will help encourage them to work together at the home.It also provides a learning experience that demonstrates curriculum for excellence. To raise awareness to parents that home school partnership services are available to them. Methods used and explain The project will take place within the school grounds although it is in a formal setting the learning style will be informal with groups. As there are no outcomes to achieve so the parents and children will learn under their own individual learning styles at their own pace in a fun way. Resources requiredThe project will require venue, parents, children, teachers any support staff required, materials for the activity, consent forms, register form, school dining tables and snacks tea, coffee, water. Relevant legislation As the project will take place under a school environment the school Improvement Plan will be required. The project is carried out following procedures relating to Data Protection Act (1998) for registration of the parents personal details for evaluation and statistics. Child Protection Act (1995) and health and safety procedures to be carried out.Relevant policies As the project will be aimed at children and parents the current policy will relate and refer throughout the duration of the activity these include Curriculum for Excellence. Getting It Right For Every Child. And Parents As Partners. Timescale for graded unit The graded unit will be carried out over twelve week course the planning stage will be submitted for the 29th of March the development stage will be submitted for the 1st of May and the final evaluation will be submitted for 22nd of May.Timescale for project The graded unit is a forty hour module. Meetings and discussion with supervisors will be four hours. The Planning and investigation of the topic will be four hours. Writing up of the plan will take six hours. Delivery of the activity will be ten hours. The evaluation which will include written and verbal communication will take Four hours. Writing of the development stage will take six hours. Write up of evaluation stage takes four hours.
